John Thrasher Wants to Ban Lawmakers from Holding Jobs at Post-Secondary Schools They Fund but Silent on Doing the Same for Charter Schools

From the Tampa Bay Times:

TALLAHASSEE — Amid a clamor to overhaul a state university system lawmakers say isn’t cutting it, Sen. John Thrasher wants to ban lawmakers from holding jobs with public colleges and universities they fund.

Given past scandal, Thrasher said it’s best to eliminate the “conflict of interest.”

Really?  A conflict of interest? Thrasher must be feeling pressure at some level to have gone this far, but it must be that there isn’t anyone anymore in his caucus to whom this little rule might apply. Why not do the same for charter schools? Oh, that’s right. Republicans have a couple who already own charter schools.

How Thrasher can propose one and not the other is high level hypocrisy. But it demonstrates just how much Thrasher and his allies are blinded in their zeal to privatize the state’s schools. Nevermind the moral bankruptcy such a double standard affirms.

About Bob Sikes

A long time ago and a planet far, far away I was an athletic trainer for the New York Mets. I was blessed to be part of the now legendary 1986 World Series Championship. My late father told me that I'd one day be thankful I had that degree in teaching from Florida State University. He was right and I became twice blesses to become a teacher in the late 1990's. After dabbling with writing about the Mets and then politics, I settled on education.
