Florida PTA on Board With Raising Teacher Salaries to National Average

. Its one thing for a couple of democrats to advance a bill which would benefit teachers. It’s another thing all together for the state’s largest public school parent organization to do so. From the Orlando Sentinel’s Leslie Postal:

The Florida PTA said today it appreciated Gov. Rick Scott had listened to teachers and parents and proposed a $2,500 raise for classroom instructors.

But the group urged the governor and the Florida Legislature to do more – and provide enough funding to boost Florida teachers’ salaries to the national average.

“By doing this, it will encourage experienced teachers to stay in the classroom by fully funding a system to provide career teachers with periodic advancement and salary increases without supplanting current funding dollars,” the PTA said.

Florida’s average teacher salary is more than $10,000 less than the national average.

About Bob Sikes

A long time ago and a planet far, far away I was an athletic trainer for the New York Mets. I was blessed to be part of the now legendary 1986 World Series Championship. My late father told me that I'd one day be thankful I had that degree in teaching from Florida State University. He was right and I became twice blesses to become a teacher in the late 1990's. After dabbling with writing about the Mets and then politics, I settled on education.
