Politifact Finds Trujillo’s Parent Trigger Claim False

It seems that a pattern is developing among Parent Trigger supporters: they can’t tell the truth. Scathing Purple Musings dispatched with the official talking points of Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Florida’s Future (FFF) here. Politifact addressed this claim that House sponsor Carlos Trujillo’s made during a March 18 hearing:

“This legislation was drafted by President Obama’s top advisers. It was drafted by President Clinton’s top advisers. Gov. Bush is a big supporter of this, so it’s not a partisan issue. I’m not sure why it’s turned into that.”

And Politifact’s ruling:

In trying to persuade Democrats to support his parent trigger bill, Trujillo said, “This legislation was drafted by President Obama’s top advisers. It was drafted by President Clinton’s top advisers.” He makes it sound as if the legislation were written in the West Wing.

Parent groups, unions and activists may disagree vehemently on the bill, but they sound in agreement on one thing: The concept was not drafted by “top advisers” to Clinton and Obama. The people who had a hand in creating the legislation would more accurately be described as supporters of Obama and Clinton, not “top advisers.” We rate his statement False.

Trujillo’s claim that the bill has bipartisan support ignores that fact that it has bipartisan opposition a well. Many republican local school board members and superintendents of schools are against Parent Trigger. Eight republican senators voted against Parent Trigger last year to defeat it. One of those, Paula Dockery, is taking an active role in defeating the bill again this year. This writer is also a republican with a documented history of writing in support of republican candidates.

Like the publicity stunt that Patricia Levesque orchestrated for the media two days ago, Trujillo’s false assertion is demonstrative of the misinformation campaign Parent Trigger’s proponents have to use to justify the bill. Their endless flow of half-truths, rhetorical spin and attacks on opponents is  for the media to consume and regurgitate. Unable to defend Parent Trigger on the merits, all this is a propaganda campaign intended to run out the clock.

About Bob Sikes

A long time ago and a planet far, far away I was an athletic trainer for the New York Mets. I was blessed to be part of the now legendary 1986 World Series Championship. My late father told me that I'd one day be thankful I had that degree in teaching from Florida State University. He was right and I became twice blesses to become a teacher in the late 1990's. After dabbling with writing about the Mets and then politics, I settled on education.
