Mavericks Charter School President Frank Biden Says “We’re Going to Take You Down”

Scathing Purple Musings was pretty hard on redifinED editor Ron Matus this week for his charter school cheerleading, but he played it straight in reporting on a National School Choice event held on Coral Springs  Thursday. The part of this event that will be noteworthy to readers of this blog were the comments from Frank Biden.

Thursday’s event also featured two high-profile figures in the charter school realm: Frank Biden, president of the Mavericks charter school network, and Jon Hage, founder, president and CEO of Charter Schools USA.

Biden, the brother of Vice President Joe Biden, offered some red meat, saying the school choice movement needs to continue organizing parents – and accumulating political power.

“It’s all about the 501(c)(4) and how much money we get in it,” he said. “And we go see our friends and we tell them we’ll support them. And we go see our enemies and look ‘em in the eye and say we’re going to take you down.”

Bring it, Frank.

But don’t you know that Hage cringed when he heard that? The tendency to make gaffes must be within the Biden genetic code. No word yet on the list of people who he wants to get into a staring contest with. Perhaps he wants the teacher union bosses who helped get his brother get elected.

At any rate, Biden’s rant just confirms the obvious. For-profit charter schools like his slimy outfit and Hage’s operation give money they got from  taxpayers to powerful tax-exempt organizations to help make them more money.

About Bob Sikes

A long time ago and a planet far, far away I was an athletic trainer for the New York Mets. I was blessed to be part of the now legendary 1986 World Series Championship. My late father told me that I'd one day be thankful I had that degree in teaching from Florida State University. He was right and I became twice blesses to become a teacher in the late 1990's. After dabbling with writing about the Mets and then politics, I settled on education.

Just in case anyone thought that only big business, ALEC, Carl Rove, the Koch Brothers, and other GOP/Tea Partiers dealt in dark money, here we have the Democratic Vice President’s brother prescribing the very same tactics, using a non-profit organization to procure unreportable funds for influence peddling. No matter that he is CEO of a very controversial, low-performing for-profit charter school chain ( http://www.miaminewtimes.com/2011-12-29/news/mavericks-in-education-florida-charter-schools-miami-dade-problems/ ), currently under investigation for fraudulently inflating attendance records in order to obtain increased public funds ( http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/local-education/audit-claims-mavericks-charter-school-got-nearly-1/nTnc7/ ). Say thank you to Citizens United and the Supreme Court.

And just who are these “enemies” he aims to take down? Public schools and their advocates? Say thank you to neo-liberals in both parties whose unflinching faith in free markets permit them and their cronies to profiteer, pilfer the public coffers and play dice with the education of our nation’s children.

  2. Anita Hoge says:

Both parties are preparing to bring public education to its knees, along with the republic. Choice and Charter Schools are the arrows in the quiver.
